Endings: Completing One Chapter of Life Before Starting a New One
intended to go, but I think I have ended up
- Douglas Noel Adams
Think back to December 2005. . . Where were you exactly one year ago today? What were you doing? Where were you living? Were you happy with your life? Was there anything you wanted to change? Did you have big plans for 2006?
As we enter into yet another holiday season, I find that this is the perfect time to take stock of what the last 12 months has contributed to our lives. In just a few short weeks we'll be counting down to 2007, and it'll be time to make all sorts of resolutions for the New Year. But before we get there, let's take some time to appreciate what we've accomplished over the last 12 months. You've worked hard over the last year - and I'd bet anything that you've learned a lot about yourself through the process. So before 2006 leaves us for good, take a moment to consider the following questions:
- How are you different today than you were 1 year ago?
- What were your biggest accomplishments in 2006? Go ahead - pick more than one!
- What did the last year teach you about your priorities, values or aspirations?
- What lessons can you take away from the "mistakes" you made over the last 12 months?
- What un-finished business are you still carrying around with you from 2006? What do you need to do now to start fresh in 2007?
- What friendships became meaningful to you over the last year? Are there any relationships that need nurturing today?
- What do you love most about your life (and yourself) today?
Most people enjoy starting the new year off with a clean slate - new beginnings suggest an element of mystery, perfection and hope. But what good is a new beginning if we can't recognize the value of the story that is now ending?
In January, we'll spend some time focusing on what you want to accomplish in the New Year (and how you can make it happen). But for now, just enjoy exactly where you are today and what it took to get you there.
Happy holidays to you all - and we'll see you in 2007!!!
